　　在卡特里娜飓风席卷新奥尔良后，当时新奥尔纪念医疗中心遭受洪水泛滥、电力中断、气温急升等问题，而医务人员在这种恶劣环境下被迫作出困扰他们未来多年的选择。医院最终有40名死者，其中有些患者被认为无法活下去，故安排了安乐死。
